Book: Fashion from A to Z

The work of Studio Piet Paris incorporates illustration, products and consultancy

Piet Paris
Illustrations

Piet Paris illustrations are statements about fashion and colourful compositions that are brimming with beauty, humour and intelligence. By means of omission and exaggeration, Piet Paris obtains a stratification in his work. The illustrations are composed of planar fields of colour with residual spaces. Contrasts play a key role in the work of Piet Paris - black and white, harsh and soft, flamboyant and meticulously mannered, Piet and Paris - and his illustrations are always inspired by fashion's dynamism and unflagging pursuit of innovation. Paris tries to capture the transience of fashion in timeless images. Piet has a broad range of editorial and corporate clients.

Piet Paris
Products

Products by Piet Paris are the expression of a fierce passion for fashion. Designer Piet Paris conceives products from the viewpoint of the designer, with an eye for form and beauty, and with plenty of attention to the design's tangible and spatial qualities. For Piet Paris product design must possess the same characteristics as his illustration work: timeless, visual, original and always proceeding from a strong composition.

October 2011

Mode van A tot Z – Fashion from A to Z

Twenty-six texts by fashion journalist Georgette Koning illustrated with letters by Piet Paris. The A for Accessoires presents Prada’s explanation for why bags are a better seller than dresses. The P for Paris eludicates why the City of Light has been the world’s fashion metropolis since the 17th century and reveals what cakes have to do with it. From the H for Haute Couture, via Q for Quant and U for Uniform to the V for Vintage. With this lexicon you can at last find out something more about the meaning of key fashion concepts. Language: dutch. English version to be announced. Published by Lecturis books

September 2011

Piet Paris: Fashion Illustrations. Second impression.

A monograph presenting more than 100 Piet Paris illustrations of fashion design over the last 20 years. The publication has been included among the 33 shortlisted Best Dutch Book Designs of 2010. 'The format, the binding, the use of paper and the "golden atmosphere" make the book into an enviable work.' Language: English. Published by W Books

For an exhibition about fashion design and traditional clothing at the Dutch Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, Piet Paris designed a series of tile patterns for the interior of a period room. The geometric illustrations make it possible to generate a never-ending series of compositions, resulting in ever-changing design tableaus. The tiles were produced by the Royal Tichelaar Makkum pottery, the oldest manufacturing company in the Netherlands. A design developed using the principles of classical craftsmanship resulted in a tailor-made contemporary product.

In 2009 more than 80 fashion labels participated, including Lanvin, Hussein Chalayan, Jil Sander, Rick Owens, Martin Margiela and Viktor & Rolf. Visitors were taken aback by the pavilions set five metres above the ground and by the diversity of designers whose work was presented in and around the Eusebius Church. Artistic director of this edition: Piet Paris. .

The Steenfabriek, the beating heart of the 2007 fashion biennale, was the backdrop for 20 different landscapes. In this gigantic example of industrial heritage the work of 30 designers was exhibited in their own distinctive universe. The big surprise was underfoot: visitors walked across terrains that proceeded from snow-white washing powder, gittering mirrors, soft matresses, crackling birdseed and bulging, air-filled cushions to arrive at the happy end: a seven-coloured rainbow. Artistic director of this edition was Piet Paris.

Fashion is present everywhere and influences everyday lives. Arnhem Fashion Biennale's main exhibition took visitors through different seasons. They got their feet wet in the 'rain hall', the first presentation space, and wove their way in a wind tunnel past clothing that seemed to have been designed to waft and flap. With its atmospheric and sensually stimulating arrangement of new work from the highest spheres of Dutch fashion design, the biennale exhibition gave visitors a new perspectieve by demonstrating that fashion is more than just clothes. Artistic direction of this pilot edition: Piet Paris.

Through his lectureships and masterclasses for fashion designers at various academies, as well as in his role as the co-founder of a post-graduate course for fashion designers, Piet Paris has developed a wealth of expertise and has gained a great breadth of experience in the world of design. His passion for fashion design led him to establish the world's only cultural event about fashion design, the Arnhem Mode Biennale, for which he served as the artistic director for the first three editions. In 2008 Paris received the Grand Seigneur, the most important fashion award in the Netherlands, an accolade for his achievements within Dutch fashion training, as artistic director of the Arnhem Mode Biennale and, of course, as a fashion illustrator who has garnered global renown. Piet Paris: Fashion Illustrations among the Best Dutch Book Designs

Piet Paris: Fashion Illustrations, published by d'Jonge Hond, has been included among the 33 shortlisted Best Dutch Book Designs of 2010. 'The combination of typography and illustrations focuses the gaze on the effect of white space and the interplay of lines,' states the jury of the Best Dutch Book Designs Foundation (Stichting Het Best Verzorgde Boek). 'The format, the binding, the use of paper and the "golden atmosphere" make the book into an enviable work.' The second impression of Piet Paris: Fashion Illustrations will be available from early September, in the Netherlands and beyond.

New Publication: Mode van A tot Z – Fashion from A to Z

2 October 2010

Piet Paris designed the backdrop of the venue of the Viktor & Rolf Spring RTW 2011 collection. He wanted to capture the concept of the show in a lifesize sketchbook filled with contrasts.

Viktor & Rolf: "Piet was one of our teachers at the art academy. We immediately thought of him for this season's show, because of the graphic, crisp and colourful nature of the collection. His work is very graphic and sometimes borders on the abstract, but is also always extremely fashionable. We love the modern tension of that. We admire him for his authentic style, and it was a great pleasure to work with him.”

Best Fashion Ambassador

November 2009

Piet Paris has been awarded the Marie Claire Prix de la Mode 2009 in the category Best Fashion Ambassador. The prize is an important mark of recognition from a lead player in Dutch fashion journalism for Piet’s work as an illustrator, as Artistic Director of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale and as a mentor to many fashion designers.‘Piet believes that all Dutch people should know how multifaceted and important fashion is – and Marie Claire cannot help but agree with him,’ the jury stated in their report. ‘To achieve that goal he even sacrificed his shyness.’
This year’s other award winners include Missoni (Best Fashion House), Consuelo Castiglioni (Best International Designer) and Cato van Ee (Best Model). The awards ceremony took place during a dinner held at the Rijksmuseum in the midst of paintings by Dutch Old Masters.

Arnhem Mode Biënnale 2009

Summer 2009

The 2009 edition of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale, which has dominated the studio’s activities for two years, drew to a close on July 5th. With Piet as Artistic Director and Marc as his assistant, the greater part of 2008 was taken up by designing the biennale exhibition and inviting the designers. The third edition of this Netherlands-based event that places fashion design in a broader cultural event has in the space of five years evolved into a truly international biennial, with the world’s cutting-edge designers presenting their work in a spectacular setting. The 2009 event was a resounding success, attracting more than 30,000 visitors over four weeks and receiving a raft of laudatory reviews in the Dutch media as well as in leading foreign magazines and newspapers. The pavilions have now been dismantled and the studio is considering how it can contribute to the organisation of the 2011 edition.

Grand Seigneur 2008

Summer 2009

Looking back a whole year, Piet Paris was the proud recipient of the Grand Seigneur 2008, which was presented on 24 July 2008. This accolade is an initiative of the MODINT trade association, an award established to honour individuals, businesses or institutions who, by their feats, accomplishments and personality, have distinguished themselves in the shaping of a better understanding of fashion and clothing. The jury wished to honour Piet Paris for his work in Dutch fashion education, as Artistic Director of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale and, of course, as a fashion illustrator whose work has for many years been gaining critical acclaim in the Netherlands and beyond. Piet is delighted to have received this award, which represents a great opportunity to turn the spotlight on the art of illustration.

House Style Award 2009

Summer 2009

The studio’s corporate identity, designed by the Coppens Alberts bureau, was announced as the winner of the 2009 Nederlandse Huisstijlprijs (The Netherlands House Style Award) in May. The jury of this biennial award organised by the Grafische Cultuurstichting (Dutch Foundation for Graphic Culture) praised the studio’s house style as a model of meticulous yet restrained design, encapsulating what the studio stands for in a simple graphic animation. The studio is a great fan of Patrick Coppens and Christine Alberts and has worked with them in the past.

Saks Fifth Avenue

March 2008

In early March, Piet spent time in New York and San Francisco for the launch of one of his biggest illustration projects so far: the Spring 2008 “WANT IT!” campaign of the prestigious American department store, Saks Fifth Avenue. Piet made illustrations of spring trends for the campaign, joining the stable of the world’s leading illustrators who have contributed to previous campaigns. He also conceived the illustrations for the shopping bags, transforming New York’s landmark buildings into fashionable models. Displays, three-dimensional figures and life-size illustrations bring Piet’s drawings to life on all ten floors and in all the display windows of the emporium on Fifth Avenue. One illustration actually revolves on a carousel on the department store’s ground floor! The campaign has been rolled out at its 54 stores across the USA, as well as in Mexico and Dubai.
